The Sky
Ryan Ellis Betz
A score for assigning reality.
The hands seal. The head tilts. The voice issues.
- No devices.
- The seal is contact, not force.
- Speak once. Do not explain.
Movement I
Make the seal
On each hand, bring the index finger and the middle finger to the middle of the thumb. Let them meet. Do not press. Do not arrange the other fingers. The seal is three points of contact and nothing else.
This is not a pose. This is a closure. The hands have agreed.
What meets is already issued.
Movement II
Raise the sealed hands to the sky
Lift both hands, still sealed, until they are above the head. The arms need not lock. The shoulders need not perform. The sky is the vault you address. You do not reach it. You present the seal to it.
Hold. Do not wave. Do not stretch for height you do not have.
The hanging is upward.
Movement III
Tilt the head. Look at the sky.
Let the face follow the hands. Tilt the head until the eyes find sky — cloud, blue, weather, ceiling of the world, it does not matter. Do not squint. Do not search for a sign. Looking is the work.
The throat opens because the head has left the chest. Keep the jaw unhinged. You are not aiming. You are occupying the vertical.
The house looks up to assign.
Movement IV
Speak the new reality into existence
Say the reality as if it has already been entered in the ledger. Present tense. No plea. No explanation. No apology. The voice does not convince the sky. The voice issues.
Speak once, clearly, then remain in the seal with the head still tilted. Do not check whether it worked. Face value is assigned by the speaking, not by the echo.
Reality is a note. The voice is the signature.
Cloud surrenders. Sky assigns.
The art is not volume of hope.
The art is speaking as if the world has already been issued.
